Violent Anti-Hispanic Attacks in the Bronx: Police Search for Suspect

“Damn Hispanic: get out of my city!” a man yelled in English at a 61-year-old Latino and also beat him furiously in a building in the Bronx (NYC), according to a complaint filed with police.

The victim received a punch in the face by a stranger in an apparent anti-Hispanic bias attack inside the lobby of an apartment building on E. 140th St. near Cypress Ave. in the neighborhood Mott Haven around 5:45 pm on Monday, January 1.

The attack could have been due to the fact that the victim did not speak Englisha police source told Daily News. The man was waiting for the elevator and since he only speaks Spanish, he did not understand what the attacker said, according to witnesses. EMS was called, but the victim refused medical attention, NYPD said

The attacker stormed out of the lobby and has not been caught. Police released a surveillance image of the suspect yesterday in hopes that someone will report him. He NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the case.

Hours later, on Monday night, a passenger wished him “Happy New Year!” to a group and in response he was beaten and stabbed several times in a subway station in the Bronx.
