A meeting of the Ecuadorian presidential candidate Daniel Noboa Azin was disrupted by a shooting on Thursday. The country was once again shaken by violence in the run-up to Sunday’s presidential elections.
The meeting took place in the southwestern city of Durán, near the large city of Guayaquil. According to a tweet from a fellow party member, Noboa and his companions were unharmed.
The shooting was reported by local media. According to the Ecuadorian police, it is not certain whether it is an attempted murder. Noboa, 35, is running for president on behalf of the Ecuatoriano Unido (United Ecuadorian) party. He has been in the Parliament of Ecuador since 2021.
In recent weeks, another presidential candidate, mayor and local politician have been assassinated in Ecuador. The murders and attempted murders are committed by drug gangs.
Last Wednesday, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead after a campaign rally in the capital Quito. Villavicencio was shot three times in the head in broad daylight. He died in hospital from his injuries.
Villavicencio had promised that if elected on August 20, he would tackle organized crime and corruption in Ecuador.
