Since confinement, the city of Bron, in the suburbs of Lyon, has seen a sharp increase in acts of violence, particularly against the police and firefighters in its working-class neighborhoods, reports Marianne.
“My city is going into a spin. Every week, tensions rise, ”a resident told the magazine.
In the hands of the socialists for years, Bron has shifted to the right after the new mayor (LR) Jérémie Bréaud was elected on July 4 on “his ambition to put an end to the feeling of insecurity”. He tripled the strength of the municipal police, created a night brigade and installed video surveillance.
“We are putting an end to tolerance at the places of deal, urban rodeos without helmets and without masks and the phenomenon of overflowing marriages”, explains to the magazine François-Xavier Pénicaud, candidate La République en Marche (LREM) who became assistant to integration and employment.
However, the town hall is now denouncing the lack of human resources “to put people behind the screens of the video surveillance center.”
In response, two video surveillance masts were sawn with a grinder at the beginning of August on Place Jean-Moulin. A week later, a fire broke out in a room in the Bron mosque. The criminal track is privileged.
The anger of the inhabitants
This situation exasperates and indignant the inhabitants. One of the founding members of the collective “Agir ensemble contre les nuisances” denounces the abandonment of the public authorities which “left the neighborhood in the hands of thugs”. According to this resident, “on security, the job was not done for 40 years”.
“Today the inhabitants find themselves in a critical situation. It’s boxing, because there was laxity, but the method of the new mayor also brings insecurity. Everyone looks at each other in faience dogs. The mayor is not going to give up on what he was elected for. And in the face, they are not used to it, ”he adds.
No change in method planned
However, according to the magazine, the town hall does not plan to change its attitude or method. Thus, in the first half of 2021, the municipal police should be reinforced and armed. Calling for appeasement, François-Xavier Pénicaud ensures that “the Republic” will take the upper hand “in this showdown”.
And this decision persists despite tags threatening the mayor with beheading discovered on October 22, a week after the assassination of Samuel Paty. The French Minister of the Interior then declared that the elected official had been placed under protection, adding that justice would be seized concerning these threats.
