Violence in southern Thailand

Tensions have once again intensified in Thailand’s three southern provinces, where several violent incidents have been reported in recent hours.

These events occur on the eve of the expiration of the statute of limitations on the repression of Tak Bai, which took place on October 25, 2004. During this tragic episode, seven demonstrators were shot dead, while 78 others died. suffocation or were crushed after being crammed into military trucks.

Among recent incidents, a van was reported stolen, a worrying reminder that stolen vehicles have in the past been used in car bombings. Additionally, a bomb exploded around 1 a.m. near the town hall in Panare district, Pattani province.

The explosion came less than 24 hours before the statute of limitations expired for the seven people wanted in connection with the Tak Bai massacre. Fear of possible impunity reignites anger and despair among the local population.
