Violence in Kosovo: 30 Armed Men Surrounded by Police Forces | Latest News

Jakarta

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said gunfire was still ongoing between armed groups and authorities in Kosovo north. One policeman died in the attack.

Kurti said at least 30 armed men were surrounded near Banjska in northern Kosovo. The police called on the armed group to surrender.

“There are at least 30 people who are surrounded by our police forces and I invite them to surrender to our security agencies,” said Kurti during a press conference, reported by AFP, Sunday (24/9/2023).

Kurti added that the group was in the vicinity of the monastery near the village of Banjska, where the patrol was ambushed on Sunday morning. The Serbian Orthodox Church confirmed gunmen stormed a monastery in Banjska, where pilgrims from the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad were staying.

“We could see armed men in uniform… they were shooting at us and we were shooting back,” Kosovo police official Veton Elshan told AFP by telephone from Banjska.

Kurti gave a statement within hours of calling the raid an act of terrorism and blaming the Serbian government.

“Organized crime with political, financial and logistical support from officials in Belgrade is attacking our country,” Kurti wrote on social media.

Meanwhile Serbian state media RTS reported that the Jarinje and Brnjak borders between Serbia and Kosovo had been closed.

Previously there was shooting in a village in northern Kosovo. One policeman was killed and another person was injured.

“Currently firefights with various calibers of firearms against our police are still ongoing,” said Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti in a post on Facebook, reported by Reuters.
