The football world was rocked by a fan showdown ahead of the UEFA Champions League qualifying match between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb. An AEK Athens fan was killed after being stabbed outside AEK’s soccer stadium in Nea Filadelfia late on Monday.
In addition to the death of the 29-year-old, the situation further aggravated with numerous injuries and arrests, leading UEFA to make the decision to postpone the match in the Greek capital, Athens.
UEFA deplores in the strongest possible terms the appalling incidents that took place in Athens last night and resulted in the loss of a life.
Tonight’s match between AEK Athens FC and GNK Dinamo will be postponed.

Arrested and injured in riots prior to the Champions League
After Dinamo Zagreb’s training session, supporters of both teams got into dangerous altercations involving flares, homemade explosives and stones.
According to Euronewsviolent exchanges between fans resulted in 96 arrests and eight injuries, including three Greeks and five Croats.
Solidarity and respect after the tragedy
The football community responded to the tragedy with heartfelt tributes. Fans gathered at the fan’s death site and set up a memorial with flowers, candles and AEK Athens scarves.

Dinamo Zagreb issued a statement condemning the riots in Athens. Land UEFA he also expressed his condolences to the family of the victim and AEK Athens FC, and they emphasized that violence has no place in sport.
The match of the 3rd preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League between AEK and Dinamo, scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, has been postponed according to UEFA’s decision.

The second leg in Zagreb will be played on Tuesday, August 15, and UEFA said it is in contact with both clubs to confirm the date of the rescheduled match on Friday, August 18, or Saturday, August 19.
The organization pointed out that the presence of visiting fans will not be allowed in both matches.
