(ANSA) – ROME, NOV 23 – Twenty-one smartwatches are arriving in Rome to protect women victims of violence. The ‘Mobile Angel’ project becomes operational in the capital, a service born from the collaboration between the Carabinieri and Roman clubs of Soroptimist International, entirely supported by the Lottomatica Foundation. These are latest generation devices connected directly to the operations center of the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Rome which, worn by victims of persecutory acts or in any case of gender violence, can send a request for help. The alarm, in addition to being able to be activated by the woman, is triggered automatically in the event of an attack such as a push or if it is torn from the wrist. The smartwatch is also equipped with a microphone and a geolocation device. The project, presented this morning, comes to life after the signing of a technical protocol in recent months between the provincial command of the Carabinieri and the Rome Prosecutor’s Office. It has already been started in other cities starting from Naples, Turin and Milan. (HANDLE).

**How does the “Mobile Angel” project address the potential for technological misuse, such as false alarms or potential tracking of victims by abusers, while still ensuring victim safety?**
## World Today News Interview: Smartwatches Battling Violence Against Women
**Introduction**
Welcome to World Today News. Today we’re delving into the innovative “Mobile Angel” project and its potential to protect women from violence. Joining us today are two esteemed guests:
* **Dr. Giulia Rossi**, a prominent sociologist specializing in gender-based violence, and
* **Commander Marco Bianchi**, representing the Carabinieri and instrumental in implementing the “Mobile Angel” initiative.
Thank you both for joining us.
**Section 1: Understanding the Need**
* **Dr. Rossi, statistics sadly show a persistent rise in violence against women. Can you shed light on the current landscape and the urgency behind initiatives like “Mobile Angel”?**
* **Commander Bianchi, what sparked the Carabinieri’s interest in this project, and what specific gaps did you hope to address in existing support systems for victims?**
**Section 2: How “Mobile Angel” Works**
* **Commander Bianchi, could you walk us through the functionality of the smartwatches? How do they detect an attack, and what happens once the alarm is triggered?**
* **Dr. Rossi, from a sociological perspective, what impact do you foresee these devices having on victims’ sense of security and empowerment? Could they potentially deter potential abusers?**
**Section 3: Potential Challenges and Future Developments**
* **Dr. Rossi, some critics argue that relying on technology could inadvertently shift the burden of responsibility onto victims. How do we ensure that these devices truly empower women without placing additional pressure on them?**
* **Commander Bianchi, what steps are being taken to address logistical challenges, such as accessibility and affordability, and ensure the project’s long-term sustainability?**
* **Looking ahead, what are your visions for expanding the “Mobile Angel” project? Are there plans to include additional features or integrate it into larger preventative strategies? **
**Conclusion**
We appreciate both Dr. Rossi and Commander Bianchi for sharing their expertise and insights on this groundbreaking initiative.
The “Mobile Angel” project presents a unique opportunity to leverage technology in the fight against gender-based violence. As we move forward, it’s crucial to critically examine its impact, address potential challenges, and work collaboratively to ensure its effectiveness in protecting vulnerable individuals.
