Violence against our young people in our schools

On March 10, many students in Quebec learned with joy the news from the Minister of Education that they will be able to celebrate their success at their prom due to the decrease in COVID-19 cases.

In stark contrast, later that evening, hundreds of saddened students took part in a candlelight vigil and memorial walk in memory of murdered teenager Lucas Gaudet in the western suburbs of Montreal.

The march served as a reminder of another march reported in The duty December 11, 2021: “A march to end the violence in Anjou”.

An organizer of the event, a primary school teacher, said: “I am very worried for the pupils of the school, who live every day with more and more violence, who witness it […] »

There is indeed a growing phenomenon of violence among young people in today’s society; it’s considered a mental health issue.

Students may be involved as victims, offenders or witnesses. We need help.

Schools have recently taken on many responsibilities well beyond their traditional role as providers of basic education.

Our public school system needs an infusion of funds to improve the school environment and make it safer to help staff raise our young people.
