ZÜRICH – Despite the ban from the international federation, Russian hockey goalie Ivan Fedotov played in the Kontinental League match and faces further punishment.

The IIHF officials said on their website that they will refer the case to the disciplinary committee due to the sanctions violations and at the same time fined the CSKA Moscow club 5,000 Swiss francs.

In August, the IIHF banned Gagarin Cup winner and Olympic silver medalist Fedotov from catching until December for breach of contract. According to the federation, he is valid with the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL, however, after returning from forced military service, he signed with CSKA. His ban has been in effect since September 1, but he still missed the Kontinental League opener against Kazan on Friday.

“As his participation constitutes a violation of the IIHF decision, we will refer it to the disciplinary committee,” representatives of the international federation said. “And because both the club and the Russian Federation allowed him to do so without a valid transfer, as required by the International Transfer Regulations, the IIHF fines the Russian Federation 5,000 francs,” added.

CSKA hockey players started the season with a 2:5 loss against Kazan, the next match will be played on Sunday.
