Violation of corona rules: Ex-Schalke professional Weston McKennie suspended for Canada game

Former Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie has been suspended for violating the internal corona rules of the American national team for the World Cup qualifier against Canada (1-1). The 23-year-old himself shared this on Instagram. He’s sorry and he hopes to be back on the team soon.

National coach Gregg Berhalter did not want to say exactly what offense McKennie had committed. The coach left it open whether the Juventus professional will return to the team against Honduras on Wednesday.

McKennie moved to the U19 from Schalke 04 for the 2017/18 season and then made the breakthrough among the professionals. In the next three years he completed a total of 91 competitive games for the Revierklub, scoring five goals and preparing eight more. For the 2020/21 season he was initially drawn on loan to the top Italian club Juventus Turin, from whom he was finally signed for 18.5 million euros plus possible bonus payments of 6.5 million euros for the current season. For the “old lady” he has now made 47 competitive appearances (six goals, three assists).
