Christmas is just around the corner and for many people that means wanting to enjoy good food and drink, both with and without alcohol.
At Vinmonopolet, it is now believed that the current calendar week could turn out to be the best ever, says Jens Nordahl, press officer at the company.
– It is heading towards the biggest calendar week of all time for Vinmonopolet, and the final result will be available at 4pm tomorrow. I think we can beat the record by a hundred to two hundred thousand liters. It remains to be seen, says Nordahl to Nettavisen.
However, Nordahl emphasizes that they will not sell more wine, spirits and other goods this year, and says that the potential record will be due to something else, if it is reached.

– Now sales are lumping together. People don’t plan the way they did during the pandemic. For example, WE sold much more in December 2020 and also last year. In the past, there was a big point in limiting infection, he says.
He also specifies that Vinmonopolet is well equipped to handle the influx.
– It’s going just fine for us. We have had bigger days before, and also hours with bigger pressure before. The flow of customers today has been very easy to handle, although there has been a bit of a queue in some places.

– What should you do if you want to try to secure a bottle or two tomorrow?
To that Nordahl replies:
– There is no crisis. We have plenty of goods in our stores, and expect a steady flow throughout the day. Although there will be fewest customers with us towards the end of the day, we encourage people to come early, as some may sell out.

When one of Nettavisen’s journalists visited Vinmonopolet in Oslo City, several wines were empty.
– Do you have any estimate of how many people will visit Vinmonopolet on Christmas Eve?
– It can quickly become approximately 350,000. Today it was approx. 420,000 in, says Nordahl.
Alcohol recommendation for parents of children
– What do you think about alcohol being consumed during the festive season, at a time when parents and children often spend a lot of time together?
– Our recommendation is that you do not drink alcohol with children present. It’s nice to enjoy yourself a bit, but not nice to spoil the day after, or the good atmosphere in the evening, says Nordahl.

– You should of course like to enjoy yourself with good food and good company, but you should avoid drinking alcohol with children present.
– What makes you take this clear stand?
– We think that Christmas is the children’s holiday, and that excessive alcohol use can create demanding and challenging situations. It is best if the children get good Christmas memories. The adults can rather relax with a glass when the children are in bed, Nordahl answers in conclusion.
