Jakarta –
Vinicius Junior will not be suspended after receiving a red card in the match against Valencia. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to cancel Vinicius’ red card.
Vinicius was sent off by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in injury time during the second half Real Madrid away to Valencia’s headquarters at the Mestalla on Sunday (21/5). The Brazilian player was judged to have hit Valencia’s Hugo Duro.
The referee decided to give Vinicius a red card after seeing the VAR footage. However, now Vinicius’ red card has been canceled by the RFEF.
In its statement, the RFEF Competition Committee assessed that the referee did not make the right decision because he did not witness the incident thoroughly. In the RFEF statement quoted by ESPN, the referee was said to have “missed a decisive part of the facts” leading him to make the wrong decision.
The incident that led to a red card for Vinicius started with a commotion that broke out between a number of Valencia and Madrid players. When the commotion was trying to be suppressed, Vinicius was seen being strangled from behind by a Valencia player.
With this decision, Vinicius means he can be included when Madrid host Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday (24/5). However, Vinicius’ fitness condition is still a question mark.
Vinicius was the center of attention after the Valencia vs Madrid match at the Mestala. The Brazilian player also received racist attacks from the host fans.
In the aftermath of this incident, Valencia was fined 45 thousand euros. The Mestalla south stand also had to be closed for five matches.
