Vincenzo Mollica: Funny Anecdotes and Surprises from Roberto Benigni and Fiorello on Che Tempo Che Fa

Guest of the episode of Che tempo che fa, broadcast on Sunday 5 November, Vincenzo Mollica retraced the funniest anecdotes of his career and received surprises from Roberto Benigni and Fiorello.

Vincenzo Mollica was a guest on the episode of What’s the weather like broadcast on Sunday 5 November. The journalist was welcomed into the studio with long applause. Today it has 70 years old and, interviewed by Fabio Faziotold some funny anecdotes about her luminous career. Furthermore, he talked about the blindness: “How am I? Let’s say I make do“. He defines himself: Impressionistic and impressionable chronicler and to Fazio he explained:

We are practically at a stage that precedes recognition. Impressionist because I have always liked impressionist painters. Impressionable because if you aren’t you can’t be a journalist unless you are moved by what you see. Three things have been useful to me in this profession: curiosity, passion and effort. I would like to become like Mr. Magoo, the cartoon who saw nothing and faced all dangers with absolute lightness. I wish I had the light inside me that Mr. Magoo had. When there are bad days, you just need to have a smile in your pocket and I always try to have that smile. Even on these days when I can’t see, we need to have an emergency smile. Memory returns fantastic things.

Vincenzo Mollica at Che tempo che fa, the interview given to Fabio Fazio

During the interview given to Fabio Fazio, Vincenzo Mollica remembered Andrea Camilleri. He said of him: “With Camilleri I shared this journey towards blindness. At a certain point, one day he said to me, when we were both losing our sight: “Vincenzino come, I want to hug you” and I said: “Andrea if we meet” (laughs, ed.)“. And he continued:

He told me that when I lost my sight – he had lost it some time before – the dreams would become more vivid. The colors would become sharper. Before going to sleep he didn’t count the sheep, he went over the paintings. He told me that after losing his sight, all the other senses came to the rescue: “I who no longer had taste or smell, my taste has returned and I recognize the flavor of ‘ncasciata pasta”.

The love for his wife Rosa Maria

Vincenzo Mollica shared with the viewers how that 50-year love with Rosa Maria was born: “I am indebted to Gaber. This year I celebrated 70 years of life, I have been with my wife Rosa Maria for 50 years and I owe it to Giorgio Gaber. I had an orange vespino, I studied at the Cattolica where she studied. One evening there was a show by Gaber, I went with Rosa Maria and that concert was a prisoner. We fell in love and since then, for 50 years, we have never left each other again. When I interviewed Giorgio I told him: “Rosa Maria and I fell in love thanks to the passion for your songs”. And Giorgio told me: “You can see that they were of some use“.

Isabella Ferrari’s confession: “If they asked me, I pulled up my shirt”

Roberto Benigni’s surprise

Fabio Fazio has prepared a surprise for Vincenzo Mollica: a video message from Roberto Benigni. The director and actor told the journalist with words full of affection and esteem:

Hi Vincenzo, what a joy to be here with you. I’m Robertino. But do you know who Vincenzo Mollica is? He is an exceptional thing, one of the funniest, most sensitive people, how many times have I bullied him doing interviews, because he cannot be resisted. You have to touch it, love it, feel it. He was the most intelligent and loving journalist I have known in my life.

Roberto Benigni explained that in all the most important stages of his career, the only journalist to whom he gave an interview was Vincenzo Mollica: “He didn’t criticize, he always spoke well about the films, the shows, the comics. Do you know why? Not because he was a flatterer, but because he chose to only talk about what he loves. And I wanted to do like him. I only wanted to talk about the things I love and at this moment, in fact, I wanted to talk about you Vincenzo Mollica“. The journalist really appreciated the surprise:

Thanks Roberto, thanks I’m touched. A poet of comedy and life. I was lucky enough to do an interview with him, perhaps the best of my life together with that of Celentano. I had it on my shoulders.

Fiorello’s message

Fiorello also wanted to surprise Vincenzo Mollica. He sent him a video message, which began hilariously: “Whoever speaks to you is authorized by the editorial committee because, as you know, we at Rai cannot go to Nove, especially on programs hosted by Fabio Fazio. In order to communicate with you, we have created a Fiorello with artificial intelligence that protects us from possible legal action“. After telling Vincenzo Mollica that he loves him in all languages, he concluded: “I’ve been on Nove for 30 seconds and I’ve already received a bank transfer, you’re very strong“. Fabio Fazio in return: “Flower, come, the doubloons are ready, we are waiting for you“.

Vincenzo Mollica and the funniest anecdotes of his career

Vincenzo Mollica will bring the behind the scenes of his career to the stage with the monologue “The art of not seeing”. The journalist explained that, although several publishers asked him to write his biography, he preferred not to do so because he notices many people’s tendency to fix the facts and not really talk about their past. Then, he told some anecdotes about his career.

The first thing I did on television was an interview with the Dalai Lama, the director who hired me, Emilio Rossi, sent me to foreign countries. The Dalai Lama was willing to give me a couple of lines, I came back all happy but they cut it to one minute and thirty minutes, broadcasting it in the middle of the night.

And on Adriano Celentano: “A very funny interview with Celentano in Sanremo. I asked him questions and he responded with silence, making faces that were more beautiful than the answers. We aired it on Tg1 at 8pm with great pleasure and satisfaction“. Then, Mike Bongiorno recalled: “My first television memory is Mike Bongiorno. It was like seeing an astronaut, a gentleman from another planet, it was like seeing Clark Kent in person. I have always preferred Clark Kent to Superman and Mike looked like him, he was the sublimation of normality“. Mollica also remembered when Federico Fellini asked him to help him write letters of apology for not showing up to collect the prizes:

We had an aunt hospitalized about fifty times. She taught me to understand important passages in life, to see what was before my eyes but I couldn’t see, she taught me many things that still accompany me now that I can’t see.
