It was 8:17 p.m. when Vincenzo Grifo raised his hands to the Serbian sky in celebration for the third time and celebrated his goal in a 3-1 victory over Backa Topola. A flawless hat trick for Freiburg.
Vincenzo Grifo never let go of the game ball, which caused so much excitement because it kept falling flat, after the game. Instead, the SC Freiburg playmaker had everyone involved sign it and packed it up as a souvenir. He will certainly have his place of honor at home in Breisgau, because what the 30-year-old achieved in Serbia doesn’t happen to him every day.
Vincenzo Grifo after the game
Unfortunate first half
The sports club was 0-1 behind against Backa Topola at half-time in a game in which a win is almost a must if SC Freiburg wants to reach the knockout phase. Added to this were the injuries to Roland Sallai and Maximilian Philipp. The first 45 minutes were forgettable. But in the second half Vincenzo Grifo came on and with it the game. 1:1 after a penalty (49th), 2:1 with a free kick (59th), 3:1 with his strong right foot (73rd) – the Italian completed the hat trick within 24 minutes.

Grifo’s third hat trick
It is only the third in his career. He scored three goals in one game for the first time in the 2014/15 season in the second division game against Greuther Fürth. However, there are still two halves left. The same feat, but within the first 45 minutes, then seven years later in the top game against Union Berlin and now also in the Europa League. Vincenzo Grifo is working on his standing as Freiburg’s “football god”, as this position has been vacant since Nils Petersen’s departure.
Grifo the leading player
Grifo is incredibly important for the Breisgauer team, not just as a goalscorer and reliable penalty taker. In the absence of captain Christian Günter, who has been injured for a long time, the Italian also wears the captain’s armband on his arm, is an absolute leader who takes responsibility and steered SC Freiburg through unusually choppy waters of late.
He will be important when we face Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen on Sunday, especially since two offensive players, Maximilian Philipp and Roland Sallai, could now be out.
