The curtain fell for Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. After a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the 37th and penultimate matchday, Vincent Kompany’s troops can no longer avoid relegation.
The Clarets had to win to have a chance of an extended stay at the English top level and also got off to the best start. Sander Berge, ex-Racing Genk, pushed well in midfield and served Jacob Bruun Larsen (25), ex-RSC Anderlecht, who hit the ball from the corner. However, they could not enjoy the bonus for long: Arijanet Muric had no recourse against the devastating strike from the advanced Pedro Porro (32.). Mickey van de Ven (82.) ultimately sealed the fate of Kompany and co. with a precise kick to the bottom left corner. Manuel Benson and Mike Trésor both started on the visiting bench. In an initial reaction, Kompany said that he does not want to dwell on the relegation for too long. “I can assure you that tomorrow is the day we will be successful again. Tomorrow is the first day of the new season for me. From Tuesday we will take the next steps,” Kompany took a determined stance.
Kompany has been at the helm of Burnley since mid-2022. In his first season, the former defender guided the team straight back to the top flight by impressively winning the Championship title. However, confirmation was not forthcoming this year, resulting in an immediate return to the second level.
