Vilnius Blooms: A Look at the City’s Beautiful Flower Gardens in 2023

“When designing flower gardens, we adhere to the principles of sustainability. In most places, we replace annual flowers with perennials. We try to be creative, we design different types of compositions. We choose local species of flowers and plants – shillocks, strawberries, oregano, yarrow. They are beautiful, but at the same time unflattering, they endure the harsh conditions of the city, they withstand the heat”, said the landscape architect of the Vilnius City Parks, finding a spare minute between her spring work. When designing flower beds, species that bloom at different times are composed so that flowers or leaves decorate that area from spring to late autumn.

Both to enjoy and to taste

This year’s innovation is that there will be an edible flower garden in the capital on Šnipiškių Street near the “CUP” Shopping Center. It will grow marigolds, mint, nasturtiums, Swiss chard, kale, pumpkins and even tomatoes.

“Urban gardens and edible flower gardens are extremely popular in Scandinavia and Western European countries. They look beautiful, but at the same time there is a kind of education for the townspeople, especially children – about the plants and vegetables that end up on our table”, said V. Marozienė.

She admitted that she would not be afraid to taste vegetables picked from such a garden – Šnipiškių street is only for pedestrians, there is no traffic nearby. “Tomatoes grown here should not be different from those grown by townspeople on their balconies,” the specialist thought.

Spring flowers are already blooming on the terraces near the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater, over 60,000 plants planted last autumn have bloomed in the Bernardin garden. spring flower bulbs, at Cathedral Square the 700 sign made of daffodils is a spring greeting to the city celebrating its 700th anniversary.

Neris embankments the meadow by the White Bridge was decorated with thousands of blooming crocuses. Daffodils and crocuses have bloomed in the Trakai Vokė manor homestead, and tulips will bloom soon.

This season, new flower beds will decorate Vokiečiai Street, Town Hall Square and its entrances, Odminiu Square and Washington Square. Flowers were also planted under the trees growing in L. Stuoka-Gucevičius square.

New rosaries are also being renovated and created in the capital. According to V. Marozienė, roses are a plant suitable for the city. They are perennial, not flattering, very aesthetic and fragrant.

This year, about 700 roses will be planted in city parks and squares. The Bernardine Garden will be filled with roses. Many of them will be planted in the Trakai Vokė Manor Park. It will also be planted with perennials – sedums, rasakilas, echinacea, astrantias, as well as some annuals to maintain the authenticity of the manor: celiosias, daisies, fuchsias, cordylines.
