Villingen-Schwenningen: More and more mangy foxes have been spotted in the Villingen-Schwenningen area – dogs should be kept on a leash

The forestry office is currently receiving more information about mangy foxes. “Mange”, also called “scabies”, affects many species of mammals. Triggers are mites that burrow into the skin of the host animal and cause itching there.

The host animals lose their coat due to scratching and rubbing, which makes them susceptible to other diseases and cold.

There are currently many observations of foxes suffering from mange. Treatment is not possible, so the focus is on increased hunting outside the pacified areas. Dogs can also be affected by mange, usually through direct contact with sick foxes.

Dog owners are therefore called for special caution and the animals should be kept on a leash.
