More than 700 events will mark 2022 in Villeurbanne, French capital of culture 2022, including a first last Friday. An inauguration with fanfare with 5000 spectators, explosion of colors and sounds in the winter greyness, with the artists of KompleX KapharnaüM and Compagnie Off.
The launch brought together a festive crowd. Mayor Cédric Van Styvendaël (PS), moved, saw a “historic day” for his city. The time of a few vocal interpellations on social rights, the intermittents du spectacle recalled the good memories of the Government during the speech of Roselyne Bachelot.
Inspired by the concept of European Capital of Culture, this “Franco-French” version is reserved for urban communities of less than 200,000 inhabitants. The Ministry of Culture and the Banque des Territoires are contributing one million euros, which will serve as a lever to promote local culture.
“In Villeurbanne, culture is not and has never been a policy like the others”
In Villeurbanne, we wipe the plaster of a label which will be awarded every two years. In this city, where 50% of the population of 153,000 inhabitants is under 20, young people are particularly involved.
“Here, culture is not and has never been a politics like the others. It has always kept at bay all forms of regression, impoverishment, narrowing of thought”, launched Cédric Van Styvendael, mayor of Villeurbanne (PS), in his inaugural speech.
On the forecourt of the TNP, the Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, said: “When I arrived at the Ministry of Culture, I said that I was going to be the Minister of Artists and Territories. Here, I concretize this commitment”.
