VILLENEUVE-LEZ-AVIGNON Medal-winning athletes awarded by the City

For two years, due to covid-19, the municipality of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon was unable to organize the award ceremony for the city’s athletes. Elected officials reached this Wednesday, September 27 highlighting the strong achievements of those who have performed nationally or even internationally.

A dozen athletes received a trophy. Within the ASVA (Sports Association Villeneuve Athlétisme), Sherif Maghlout, general coach, and Julien Murgia, technical director, congratulated. Pascale Bories, the mayor, retraces their journey: “They excelled during the French masters championships which took place last June in Châteauroux. Out of 1,000 athletes gathered, Chérif won the title of French long jump champion with a jump of 5.45m. He will also represent the country at the world championships to be held in Poland next March. As for Julien, congratulations for the bronze medal obtained in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16’05 seconds.

Two other trophies were awarded to Baptiste Levert and Eulalie Clech, both members of ASV swimming (Villeneuve sports association). He is a pupil at Sancta Maria and has won two medals at the French youth championships organized in Pau. He became vice-champion of France in the 800-meter freestyle and 1,500-meter freestyle. She studied at the Jean-Vilar high school in the new “swimmer-study” class and distinguished herself in Amiens during the French open summer championships by becoming vice-champion of France junior in the 1,500 metres.

On the part of the Villeneuve judo club, the titles were linked again this year. Mathis Dufraigne became French champion in the minimum category in under 42 kilos last March. With Antoine Bottariga they also won the title of vice-champions of France for departmental team. Kaïs Guettari hit the international tatami and won silver at the European Championships for Cadets under 50 kilos, which took place in Croatia. In the process, she won gold in Strasbourg and was selected with the French squad for the world championship in Sarajevo.

Clara Mermet finished 3rd in the Youth Olympic Games, second in the French championship, 3rd in the cadet European Cup… She was the number 1 substitute at the world championship with France. The city of Villeneuve also honored two judokas who arrived from Ukraine, Ivan Chernyshenko and Danyil Zoubko, who have worn the club’s colors internationally. Pascale Bories expressed her thanks to the volunteers who make these sports associations exist and also congratulated Alain Sanciaume, elected to sport and president of RCAGR (Rugby club Les Angles Gard rhodanien) who is starting his season well in Federal 2, with a flawless in the first three games.
