Villena Treasure: Ancient Artifacts Made from Meteorite Discovered in Spain

SPAIN – An archaeologist delves deeper into history, sometimes finding more than just ancient artifacts. This happened in 1963 when the Villena Treasure, an ancient collection of 59 valuable items, was discovered in a gravel pit in the Spanish port city of Alicante.

Reporting from Unilad, Tuesday, February 15 2024, researchers at that time were amazed by the beauty and richness of the collection. Gold bracelets, silver bowls and other artifacts depict the splendor of the Bronze Age.

However, what is most interesting are the two iron fragments found with the treasure.

Based on researchers’ reports in the 1960s, the iron fragments had unique characteristics. They were plated with ‘a dark tin metal that gleamed in some areas, and covered with an iron-like oxide that was mostly cracked’.

In a recent study published in the journal Trabajos de Prehistoria, scientists revealed that the two iron fragments actually came from a meteorite that fell to Earth about a million years ago. The fragments were then processed between 1400 and 1200 BC before being discovered in Spain.

Ignacio Montero-Ruiz, a senior author on the study, explained that the two artifacts were the first objects found on the Iberian Peninsula made from materials originating from outside planet Earth.

This discovery not only changes the understanding of the Villena Treasure, but also provides new insights into past life and culture.

“In this case, [barang-barang tersebut] may be a hidden treasure that belongs to an entire community, not to an individual,” Montero-Ruiz added.

However, the mystery still continues. Although it has been confirmed that the two pieces of iron are the first and oldest meteorite iron objects discovered in Spanish territory. It’s not clear who made it or where it came from. Montero-Ruiz said this remains a puzzle.

“Who produces it and where it is obtained from is still a question that needs to be answered,” Montero-Ruiz said.

Along with these discoveries, new questions have emerged that invite researchers to continue digging deeper into history. With each discovery, we get closer to uncovering the mysteries of the past that are still hidden deep in the ground.
