Villarreal and London’s Chelsea made it to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Villarreal won Turin’s Juventus 3: 0 (3: 0), with the Spanish club beating two games to 4: 1.
The visitors’ Gerards Moreno took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side’s goalie and center backs 78 minutes into the match. Pau Torress doubled his lead after 85 minutes with a superb free kick strike that flew in just under the far top corner.
In the second game, Chelsea beat Lille 2: 1 (1: 1), winning 4: 1 in two games. Buraks Jilmazs put the home team in the lead in the 38th minute of the match, but Kristians Pulisiks made a draw shortly before the end of the first half. In the 71st minute of the match, Sesar Aspilikveta scored the winning goal.
Munich’s Bayern, Liverpool, Manchester’s City, Madrid’s Real, Lisbon’s Benfica and Madrid’s Atletico also made it to the quarterfinals. The draw for the quarterfinals will take place on March 18. In the UEFA Champions League group tournament, 32 teams were divided into eight groups of four each. The first two entered the next round, the third moved to the Europa League, and the fourth European Cup season was over.
The finals of this season will take place on May 28 in Paris, France, although it was originally scheduled for St. Petersburg, Russia. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, UEFA deprived St. Petersburg of the right to host the final. In the 2020/2021 season, Chelsea in the Portuguese city of Porto beat Manchester City 1-0 in the final of the league competition.
