Villagers in Spain march to Madrid to protect rural life and economy

In the march organized in Madrid city center with the call of the platform called “Immediate Aid to Rural Life” (SOS Rural) and with the support of more than 300 non-governmental organizations (NGO), the villagers, central government and local governments supported the defense of rural life, whose population is decreasing day by day. wanted.

Demonstrators from different business lines in the villages, such as farmers, livestock workers, transporters, hunters, toured the city center with their tractors and pickup trucks.

Arguing that the left coalition government’s environmental and animal rights laws endanger rural life and harm the producers here, the demonstrators claimed that the measures taken against drought were also insufficient.

Daniel Ruiz, spokesperson for SOS Rural, told the press, “The government’s policies are leading us to destruction. Irrational laws hinder national agricultural and livestock production and jeopardize the survival of producers. 85 percent of the laws enacted are made with the dictation of the European Union. Such a trend will only increase foreign dependency in agriculture and animal husbandry. We need urgent help,” he said.

NGOs participating in this demonstration, which took place before the local elections to be held on 28 May in Spain, said, “We are neither right-wing nor left-wing. Decisions taken by both the central government and local governments are not sufficient to solve the problems” and argued that their actions are not different from the farmers in the Netherlands, Germany and France.
