Residents of the village of Aberhosan in Wales went crazy: every morning from exactly 7am, they could no longer access the Internet.
Electric jammers
The ISP performed numerous repairs and replaced an Internet cable, but nothing helped. The problems persisted for the four hundred inhabitants of the town. It was only when engineers from headquarters elsewhere in Great Britain were involved that the problem was found.
“We made a very last attempt,” says one of the engineers British media. “We tested whether there were any electrical jammers in the village.”

From 6 a.m. the researchers walked through the village in the pouring rain. And sure enough: “At 7:00 am the test device detected an electrical fault”.
Old picture tube
The researchers rang the doorbell at the house where the interference appeared to be coming from. There, the unsuspecting residents watched television. Every day from 7 am they looked at their old picture tube, which turned out to be causing internet disruptions throughout the village.
“The residents were quite shocked when they heard that their old television had caused internet problems in the whole town for eighteen months,” says the engineer. “They promised to turn off the television immediately and stop using it.”

The failures have not occurred since then. Suzanne Rutherford, head of the ISP’s engineering department, says the problems are more common. Lamps and microwave ovens can also cause internet disruptions.
“We ask people to check their equipment. Devices must be certified and meet current standards.”
