/ world today news/ Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that the South Stream project meets the national interests and he has no intention of giving it up, Reuters reported.
Orbán’s position came amid discussions in the EU of new sanctions against Russia that could affect the energy sector.
Orban said that although he supports Ukraine, he must also think about the interests of his country and will not give up South Stream.
“If the South Stream gas pipeline has to pass through our country in order to maintain good business relations with Russia, of course we are in favor of South Stream,” he said.
For the realization of the land part of the project, Russia signed agreements with Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia. However, the European Commission considered that these contracts violate EU legislation, in particular the third energy package. The Bulgarian authorities have already announced that they are stopping work on the project after a warning from the European Commission for non-compliance with EU norms. In response, Russia filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the implementation of the rules of this energy package, which prohibits gas companies from owning the main gas pipelines in the EU. /RIA “Novosti”
