Viktor Gyökeres: Sporting CP’s Swedish Striker Tops Transfermarkt’s List of Most Valuable Players in Portugal

In twenty games for the Lions this season, Viktor Gyökeres scored 17 goals and made six assists in all competitions. The performance within the field is now joined by the exponential growth in market value.

He is one of the most prominent players in the Portuguese League and now appears at the top of the most valuable footballers playing in Portugal, according to the “Transfermarkt” portal and the last reevaluation of the year.

The case of the scorer for Sporting CP, leader of the League, is the most extraordinary. The Swede, who was valued at 13 million euros in June this year, when he played his last games for Coventry City (in the second tier in England), needed just three months to add another 19 million euros to that valuation.

In September, Viktor Gyökeres began to show himself to the fans of the “lions” with a pass valued at 32 million euros, but this appreciation would not stop there: in the last evaluation of the year, the Swede saw his football pass increase in value by another 13 million euros and reach the top of the players with the highest market value in Portugal, together with Diogo Costa (FC Porto) and António Silva (SL Benfica).

To JE, Luís Cassiano Neves, founding partner of 14 Sports Law, considers that the Swedish striker is one of the great candidates to be one of the club’s best sales ever: “Due to the intensity he has shown in Alvalade, there is an expectation of strong sale.”

In July, the “lions” acquired the Swedish footballer’s sporting rights for 20 million euros (with the striker signing a contract until 2028) to which they can add another four million euros resulting from the achievement of individual and collective goals. The release clause was the highest ever for a footballer at the club: 100 million euros.

The “green and white” SAD also revealed that Coventry City has the right to receive the amount corresponding to 15% of the added value of a future transfer, a percentage that may be reduced up to 10% at the option of Sporting SAD or depending on also the achievement of objectives. Sporting’s SAD is in charge of the solidarity mechanism, with intermediation services costing two million euros.

Sporting CP had to face competition from Premier League clubs such as Brentford, West Ham and Everton but invested early on in approaching the player and only later negotiating the transfer fee with Coventry. After some advances and retreats, the “green and whites” convinced the British that they were running a serious risk of seeing the Swede leave at no cost (Gyokeres’ contract ended next year).
