Viktor Gyökere’s success at Sporting Club continues.
At home against Young Boys, he scored his 29th competitive goal and 40th point of the season.
And then he is the best scorer in the world – again.
Sporting Club’s Swedish international striker didn’t even need 13 minutes before he had struck in the Europa League home game against Swiss Young Boys.
Sporting’s nine received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, turned up and thundered in 1-0 – unstoppable David von Ballmoos in the Young Boys goal.
Best in the world – again
The goal was 25-year-old Gyökeres’ fifth in the Europa League this season. His 29th overall in his 32nd competitive game since moving from Coventry last summer.
Add to that, combined with his 11 assists, it was his 40th point of the season.
Which means that he once again tops the list of the players who scored the most points this season – worldwide. With a point to the credit of both PSG star Kylian Mbappé and PSV goal-stealer Luuk de Jong.
Fires tight
Gyökeres would also be in a prime position to score his 30th competitive goal of the season.
In the 57th minute, the Swede got the chance from the penalty spot. But David von Ballmoos got revenge and saved a rather weak penalty. Gyökere’s first miss from eleven meters in the Sporting jersey after six consecutive successful penalties.
Instead, Young Boys would score an equalizing penalty before the final whistle. However, there was nothing that affected Sporting’s advancement to the Europa League round of 16, as 1–1 meant Sporting won the doubleheader with a total of 4–2.
square3
Speaking of penalties, that was exactly what was required in Rome, when the round of 16 between AS Roma and Feyenoord needed a penalty shoot-out to be decided, after a 2-2 aggregate over two meetings. Once there, it was Roma who drew the longest straw (despite Romelu Lukaku burning his penalty). Nicola Zalewski thundered home the decisive penalty that sent Roma through.
Elsewhere, at an earlier time, club consultant Zlatan Ibrahimovic sat in the stands and watched his beloved AC Milan advance to the next round.
Despite the loss.
Benjamin Bourigeaud’s hat-trick must have given Rennes a 3-2 home victory.. But thanks to 3-0 in Italian favor in the first meeting, the “Rossoneri” still went on to the round of 16 with a total of 5-3.
