Viktor Gyökere’s first time at Sporting has gone smoothly.
After just over an hour of play on Thursday evening, Sporting ended up at a disadvantage when Dane William Boving gave Sturm Graz in the Europa Leauge group game.
Then the Swede struck again.
With a quarter of a game left, Viktor Gyökeres pushed forward and poked in the equalizer from close range. The goal came in Gyökere’s debut in a European context and was thus the Swede’s first in European play and his fourth goal since moving to Sporting.
Shortly after, Sporting completed their turnaround as Ousmane Diomande headed in the lead. The match ended 2-1 and Sporting thus got a taste of the European adventure.
– We knew it would be a tough match, they play with a lot of energy and run a lot so we had to match their physicality. It was tough to concede a goal at the start of the second half, but we kept our patience. We didn’t play great but we kept going, scored two goals and won. In the end, we got what we deserved, says Gyökeres in Viaplay’s broadcast after the match.
The Swede was satisfied with his first full hit in the European Games.
– It was a good feeling (to score). I didn’t have many chances today so it was nice to get it. And it was an important goal, because it was the equaliser.
As previously mentioned, the goal was Gyökeres’ fourth in the Sporting shirt. When the 25-year-old was interviewed after the match, however, the reporter had mixed up the numbers – and asked the question how it feels to have now scored five goals.
The Sporting Swede was then somewhat put off.
– Erh, I think it’s… four? But maybe you’ve found some goal that I’ve forgotten, haha. No, but it’s nice to have been able to make an impact (since arriving) but the most important thing is that we’ve won almost all of our games. We have started well as a team and now we have to continue like this, concludes Viktor Gyökeres.
