Viktor Axelsen has officially withdrawn from the Denmark Open 2023 and will certainly not appear in the round of 16 against Lee Zii Jia.

This confirmation was announced by the official BWF Twitter on Thursday (19/10) afternoon WIB.

“First seed Viktor Axelsen withdrew from the Denmark Open 2023 due to a left foot injury. This means his opponent in the round of 16, Lee Zii Jia, has qualified for the quarter-finals,” wrote BWF.

This announcement was not too surprising because Axelsen had previously spread the code that he would withdraw from the last 16 of the Denmark Open 2023.

In an interview with badminton-europe, Axelsen admitted that he felt pain in his left leg so he considered withdrawing before competing.

“At this point, I don’t think tomorrow’s match (against Lee Zii Jia) will happen,” said Axelsen.

“I feel pain in my left leg, so something extraordinary needs to happen so that I can be ready for tomorrow (against Lee Zii Jia),” Axelsen added.

Withdrawing from the Denmark Open 2023 is one of the tough decisions that Axelsen has to take. The injury he suffered made it difficult to achieve maximum results in several major events in 2023.

The Hong Kong Open 2023 which took place in mid-September was the last event Axelsen participated in before appearing at the Denmark Open 2023.

Previously, Axelsen also surprisingly lost at the Hong Kong Open 2023 with a score of 16-21, 10-21 against Taiwan’s representative, Chia Hao Lee.

Thus, Axelsen failed to realize his ambition to lift the trophy at home. Axelsen’s steps had to be stopped in the last 16 and made Zii Jia automatically qualify for the quarter-finals.
