Viktor Axelsen Wins 2023 Indonesia Open and Throws Racket in Celebration

KOMPAS.com – Danish men’s singles, Viktor Axelsen, throws a racket after winning the 2023 Indonesia Open.

Viktor Axelsen won the 2023 Indonesia Open after defeating the co-host, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, in the final match at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Sunday (18/6/2023).

Axelsen won in a straight game or two straight games with a score of 21-14, 21-13. Axelsen then celebrated after confirming the title.

The gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gave two rackets to the audience. The first racket he gave to a fan who was in the stands behind his court.

He then took another racket from his bag, before throwing it at the crowd in the upper stands.

As for the matter of the 2023 Indonesia Open final, Axelsen praised Ginting. He said Ginting was a more talented player than himself.

“Ginting is much more talented than me. He plays badminton which is very fun to watch,” Axelsen said in a press conference which was also attended by Kompas.com.

“Maybe my game is a little more boring,” Axelsen continued with a laugh.

Apart from that, Axelsen also recognized Ginting as a formidable opponent for him.

“The toughest opponent depends on the arena, where you play, how come I play, and so on. However, Anthony Ginting has been playing very well recently,” he said.

“Champion of the Singapore Open and Asian Championships. So, he is definitely an opponent to beat,” added Axelsen.

Axelsen admitted that he did not expect it because previously he had also experienced an injury and was absent from several tournaments.

“I actually can’t say anything right now. I never thought I could win the Indonesia Open for the third time in a row,” said Axelsen.

“This is a very big victory for me and I am very grateful to have this experience,” he said.

“Win or lose, I rule that out. However, playing at Istora Senayan will be one of the experiences that sticks in my mind,” said Axelsen.
