The Vikings had to give up eight starting players for the Dragons due to injuries – including the quarterbacks Nico Hroud and Michael Szabo. The defending champion knew how to use this, celebrated his eighth victory and also took revenge for the 13:24-Loss in the first Vienna derby of the season and secured second place.
In a game with few points, the guests advanced, but the Dragons took the lead with two touchdowns in the second quarter. With 14:7 it was halftime. After the break, the home side didn’t bring any points onto the scoreboard, but they only allowed one field goal in the fourth quarter. Thanks to the scarce 14:10 they are unbeaten for two months now. For the Vikings, the third defeat meant fourth place in the final table of the regular season and an away game in Prague in the playoffs. The Dragons, on the other hand, can look forward to home advantage in the semifinals. In two weeks they will welcome the Thalheim Graz Giants, who will be away in Week 7 24:7 could defeat.
Comments on the game:
Danube Dragons Head Coach Fred Armstrong: “What a hard fought, physical game of football by both teams. The adjustments made by our coaches on defense and offense as well as the great special teams made the difference today. Our fans were loud and proud. We felt their energy. Home advantage in the playoffs is fantastic.”
Vienna Vikings Head Coach Ivan Zivko: “It was not easy for us to survive with a 17-year-old quarterback and to deal with the many injuries. Congratulations to the Dragons on the win.”
