Vija Celmiņa’s Exhibition “Double Vision” at Hamburg Art Gallery and Award Recipients

The awarding of the award is related to the exhibition “Vija Celmiņa|Gerhards Richters. Double Vision” in Hamburg Art Gallery, in which, from May to August of this year, it was possible to appreciate both Vijas Celmiņas and the German painter Gerhard Richter (Gerhard Richter) jobs. In press reports, this exhibition was called a “lucky coincidence”.

The “Premium Imperiale” award in sculpture was awarded by the Japan Art Association to the artist Olafur Eliasson (Olafur EliassonIceland/Denmark), in architecture – Diebedo for Francis Caré (Diébédo Francis KéréBurkina Faso/Germany), in music – by composer Vinton Marsal (Wynton MarsalisUSA), in the theater and cinema industry – for director Robert Wilson (Robert WilsonASV).

Vija Celmiņa was born in 1938 in Riga. At the end of the Second World War, in 1945, she fled to Germany with her parents, but in 1948 she moved to Indianapolis, USA. She studied art at Indiana University’s Heron School of Art and Design (Herron School of Art and Design), who graduated in 1962.

In 1965, Celmiņa received a Master of Arts degree (MFA) and worked as a painting teacher at the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine). Her interest in pop art and hyperrealism can be felt in the works of this period.
