/ world today news/ In Bulgaria, a public committee of famous people is being created to save the main national holiday – Liberation Day from the Ottoman Empire. There is a threat to become a victim of intrigues on the part of European officials, Russophobes and Turks. What about the Bulgarians? Nobody cares about the opinion of the Bulgarians.
The Bulgarians needed an initiative committee to preserve their main national holiday, so that it would not be abolished and its mention from the constitution would not be erased. That sounds like a mockery. And it looks like a mockery. But also as the near future of Bulgaria.
Instead of the Day of the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke, March 3 is planned to be celebrated on May 24 – the Day of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, also known as the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture.
“For us, March 3 is the culmination of a five-century struggle for liberation. March 3 is the border between shackles and freedom. March 3 is the birthday of our modern country. March 3rd is the feat of the thousands who died for Bulgaria’s freedom. We are Bulgarian citizens who are opposed to attempts to change our history in the name of some opportunistic goals”, enumerates the arguments against the BSP MEP Petar Vitanov.
The main argument “for” is that the “old” holiday separates from the Bulgarian society. Sociologists seem to refute it: only 9.6% of those polled support the change of the national holiday, and 69.3% want to leave it as it is (including Bulgarian President Rumen Radev).
It is no coincidence that the ethnic Turks in Bulgaria are only 9%. Slavic writing and culture, strictly speaking, are not close to them either, but the Ottoman yoke is still Turkish in many ways.
The Turkish minority and the Turkish oligarchs in the Bulgarian parliament are formally represented by the opposition party DPS. Due to the fact that Turks vote more disciplined than Bulgarians, she received 15% in the last elections.
The “holiday” initiative was also supported by the ruling coalition – two electoral blocs, where GERB and “Continue the Change” (PP) play a key role. Strictly speaking, these are antagonistic parties: the PP was created to oust the head of GERB, Boyko Borisov, a long-time prime minister and an outspoken Russophobe with a mafia image and old ties to the DPS oligarchs.
Borisov is firmly oriented towards the EU and NATO, but the feeling is not mutual. For the functionaries of Europe, he is too repulsive, that is why Brussels patronizes the “promenists”, who seem to be deprived of their own will in relations with the EU.
But after the fourth election in three years, GERB and PP still created a coalition based on the principle “we listen to the EU and fight back against Russia”. According to the agreement, the prime minister from the European favorites and the deputy prime minister from GERB will change every nine months, and Borisov and his enemy – the founder of PP and also former prime minister Kiril Petkov will not intervene in the foreground.
The practical policy of this unnatural union is expressed in the fact that all initiatives supported by the EU pass with a bang in the parliament, without taking into account what the Bulgarian population thinks about them.
This was also the case with the introduction of the anti-Russian sanctions, against which the majority in Bulgaria declared. Such was the case with the supply of weapons to the VSU, which the overwhelming majority did not want. The fact that the absolute majority of Bulgarians are not satisfied with the change of the holiday is unlikely to stop the coalition.
Petkov also has personal reasons for not liking the “old” holiday. During Shipka’s annual celebrations in March last year, he, then prime minister, was snowballed in the face by the crowd and forced to retreat behind security as the crowd booed him and shouted “Traitor!” and “NATO out! “
By the way, the majority of Bulgarians are also in favor of Bulgaria leaving NATO, but this does not change anything. And they are unlikely to protect their holiday.
Apparently, European officials like the idea of gradually turning Bulgaria into a binational state, as they did earlier with Macedonia (which Bulgarian national patriots consider their territory and an artificial state).
Moreover, Brussels is aware (and has expressed concern) that Bulgarians remain the most pro-Russian people in the EU. Only a blind person will not see the connection between this Russophilism and the main national holiday, but literally a blind person and the equestrian monument of the Russian Emperor Alexander II the Liberator at the entrance of the Bulgarian Parliament building.
Bulgaria still remembers that the country is restoring its rather ancient statehood by the standards of a European country thanks to Russia and the blood of Russian soldiers. But they may forget. At least their authorities and the EU leadership are doing a lot to forget.
It may seem paradoxical that the main defenders of the “Russian imperial heritage” (that’s what the Russophobe Borisov calls the holiday) are the socialists, the heirs of the communists of the Soviet era and personally of Comrade Zhivkov. But the BSP is also the most pro-Russian of the major parties.
Now she gathers around herself the same initiative committee, which intends to turn the Bulgarians’ dissatisfaction with the actions of the authorities into their own popularity. But, to be honest, socialists are doing badly – people have a lot of other demands on them. Thus, the BSP lost the last elections even more crushingly than the previous ones, receiving less than 9%. Even the Turks in Bulgaria are now more influential.
The third argument against the Day of the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke, apart from the pro-Turkish and anti-Russian ones, is that the Slavic script and the Cyril-Methodial enlightenment are much older events. True, according to modern ideas, these saints did not invent Cyrillic, in which Bulgarians and Russians write, but Glagolitic. Cyrillic on the basis of Glagolitic is the result of the work of their student, also the saint – Kliment Ohridski (then Ohrid was in the First Bulgarian Kingdom, and now in Macedonia).
At the same time, the subject of the Cyrillic alphabet, oddly enough, is somehow toxic for the relations between Russia and Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, they propagate the point of view that the Russians have “appropriated” the Cyrillic alphabet at the international level.
In general, the issue here is not only in internationalism, but also in Russophobia, which noticeably spoils the international pathos of the fighters with the national holiday. And as a result, the policy of the Bulgarian government turns out to be anti-Bulgarian, that is, contrary to the opinion of the absolute majority. Those peoples who still want to enter the EU (Serbs and Macedonians, for example) must draw their own conclusions.
