So now it is official: Next season SC Bern will rely entirely on goalkeeper Philip Wüthrich (23). The Finn Tomi Karhunen (31), who was signed in late autumn 2019 and has always been a sure bet, has to go. Daniel Manzato (37) comes from Geneva for him. This means that the SCB will be able to play with four foreign field players again in the future. The decision is right, but also brave.
–
Two years ago, after the departure of Leonardo Genoni, the SCB took a risk with the duo Niklas Schlegel and Pascal Caminada. And failed on edge. Schlegel, today one of the best goalies in the league, broke up under pressure in Bern and was transferred to Lugano in December. The mortgage that the SCB had gotten up to this point in time was large. Too large. In the end, as the reigning champions, Bern even missed the playoffs.

4 bets in 12 games make little sense
Philip Wüthrich does not yet know what it is like to play in front of 17,000 fans who want to see all the victories and who sometimes whistle when the performance on the ice is not right. But unlike Schlegel, Wüthrich could now be carefully introduced to the task. He was given games from the start in which the young goalkeeper could excel. And he was taken out of the line of fire when he fell into a performance slump. Even if four appearances from the last twelve games hardly make sense with a view to the future.
–
He already showed that Wüthrich can handle pressure in the Swiss League at Langenthal, when the ex-SCB Junior rose to number 1 after the injury of regular goalkeeper Marco Mathis and led Oberaargau to the championship title in 2019. “I have never seen a goalkeeper before who exuded such calm at such a young age,” says ex-team-mate Yves Müller (32), still impressed today.

Wüthrich can continue tradition
The SCB sports director and former world-class goalkeeper Florence Schelling says: “Philip Wüthrich is mentally very strong. An aspiring goalie. Daniel Manzato, on the other hand, is very experienced and has proven that he can survive in this league. The two complement each other perfectly. “
–
The chances are good that the 23-year-old will continue the glorious goalie tradition at SCB. And with Junior Andri Henauer (18), who has extended until 2024 and will be loaned to La Chaux-de-Fonds next season, the next talent is already ready. He is to be integrated into the first team of the SCB in one and a half years.
