A Vietnamese court sentenced businesswoman Truong My Lan to death for fraud amounting to $12 billion. The convicted person has the right to appeal the verdict in accordance with the laws of the country. Details reports Bloomberg.
Truong My Lan, 67, chairman of Van Thinh Phat Group, was arrested in 2022. The Vietnamese businesswoman faces several charges, including bribing government officials and violating bank lending rules. According to investigators, she embezzled funds from the Saigon Commercial Bank between February 2018 and October 2022.
According to Vietnamese criminal procedure law, Lan has the right to appeal the verdict of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court within 15 days. Although the embezzlement charge carried the death penalty, the court also sentenced her to 20 years in prison on two other charges – violating banking regulations and offering a bribe.
Lan is also ordered to pay about 674 trillion dong ($27 billion) in compensation, more than double the $12 billion she is accused of committing fraud.
