Vietnam to build six semiconductor factories

Vietnam plans to build six semiconductor factories by 2050, aiming to become a major player in the industry. Prime Minister Pham Minh Trinh’s strategy includes developing standard chips, developing electronics, creating a skilled workforce, attracting investment and introducing more enterprises to promote business growth. By 2050, the country aims to have three semiconductor factories, 20 packaging and testing facilities and hundreds of local chip design companies.

In the first phase (2024–2030), Vietnam will focus on attracting foreign investment and building core competencies in semiconductor manufacturing. The plan is to build one small plant, 10 packaging and testing facilities, and train more than 50,000 engineers. Semiconductor industry revenue should exceed $25 billion, and electronics industry revenue should exceed $225 billion.

In the second phase (2030-2040), it is planned to build two additional factories and increase the number of qualified specialists to 100,000. Annual semiconductor revenue is expected to exceed $50 billion, while the electronics industry is expected to reach $485 billion.

In the third phase (2040–2050), Vietnam plans to build three more factories and increase the number of chip development companies to 600. By 2050, the revenue of the semiconductor industry should exceed $100 billion, and the annual revenue of the electronics industry should exceed $1 trillion.

Despite investments already made by companies such as Intel and Samsung, Vietnam faces challenges including energy supply and technology infrastructure. Addressing these issues will be critical to the successful implementation of the semiconductor sector’s development strategy.
