Vietnam promotes trade cooperation with Latin American countries through CPTPP | Economy

Hanoi (VNA) – A symposium on promoting cooperation between Vietnam and Mexico, Chile, Peru in trade and investment was held Monday in Hanoi, with the aim of seeking to make the most of the benefits of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The event brought together representatives of different ministries, sectors and localities of Vietnam, ambassadors of Mexico, from Chile and Peru to Vietnam, many companies. Vietnamese Trade Advisors in Mexico, Chile and Peru attended via video conference and updated information on local trade policies and markets.

Participants discussed export opportunities to these Latin American markets in the context of COVID-19.

The CPTPP was ratified on December 30, 2018 by seven of the 11 member countries and has been in force in Vietnam since January 14, 2019. Among the countries participating in the CPTPP, Mexico has already ratified it, but Peru and Chili don’t have it yet. However, one year after the entry into force of the CPTPP, trade between Vietnam and these three countries reached 5.12 billion dollars in 2019, including 4.11 billion Vietnamese exports (+ 26.76% in annual variation).

In the first ten months of this year, despite the impacts of COVID-19, Vietnamese exports to these three Latin American countries are estimated at $ 3.74 billion, an increase of 4.6% year on year .
