Vietnam determined to ensure the success of the SEA Games 31

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 31^is Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) have been postponed to May 2022. According to the General Department of Physical Education and Sports, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, they will be held in Hanoi and in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hà Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho and Bac Giang. These localities are finalizing the preparations for the infrastructures in which the athletes will have to compete.

Inspections at competition venues

The SEA Games 31 Organizing Committee carried out numerous inspections at the competition venues, such as the My Dinh National Sports Complex, the Hanoi National Sports Training Center and the University of Physical Education and Tu Son sports in Bac Ninh province in the north.

According to Trân Duc Phân, deputy head of the General Department of Physical Education and Sports, the managers of competition venues such as the My Dinh National Stadium and the Aquatic Sports Palace in the My Dinh National Sports Complex, the National Center shooting under the Hanoi National Sports Training Center, are working to finalize the upgrading of the infrastructure.

“Vietnam is ready to welcome sports delegations from the 11 countries of the region to the SEA Games 31 in mid-May 2022”said Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoàng Dao Cuong.

Speaking at the 6^e ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-6) held virtually last October, Cuong said that after nearly five months of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, preparations for this meeting you regional sportsman are accelerated in the spirit of ensuring the best possible facilities and the absolute safety of the participants in the event.

At the Southeast Asian Games Federation Council (SEAGF) meeting, held online on December 7, Cuong expressed his wish to receive assistance from countries in the region in organizing of these games.

Safety first

“Vietnam is keen to receive help and support from SEAGF, Southeast Asian National Olympic Committees, countries and meeting participants in order to successfully organize the SEA Games 31”, he insisted.

Releasing a report on the preparations for the SEA Games 31, Hoàng Quôc Vinh, director of the High Level Sports Department 1, under the General Department of Physical Education and Sports, announced that the event would include in total more than 520 tests from 40 different disciplines. The event is expected to see the participation of around 10,000 people.

Regarding the anti-COVID-19 measures, Nguyên Van Phu, a member of the healthcare and anti-doping subcommittee of the Games Organizing Committee, claimed that the first aid and COVID-19 testing services would be provided both in competition and out of competition. Athletes, coaches and members of delegations will have to undergo regular tests.

During the meeting, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia also informed about the country’s preparations for SEA Games 32, which will take place in Phnom Penh from May 5 to 17, 2023. The chairman of the said committee, Thong Khon, was also appointed co-chair of the SEAGF. The next SEAGF Board meeting will take place on May 11, 2022.

Thailand and Malaysia have hosted the SEA Games six times in the past, holding the record. Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines have all hosted the event four times. Myanmar ranks third with three Games, while Vietnam, Brunei and Laos have hosted it only once.

During these last two editions, respectively in 2017 and 2019, Vietnam ranked respectively in 3^e and 2^e position of the classification by nations. He even dominated a few disciplines like athletics and football.

Welcoming this biggest sporting event in the region for the second time, it will do its utmost to once again bring joy and pride to the supporters.
