Vietnam defeat Indonesia to win the championship title AFF U-23 Cup 2023. Vietnam is now the most champion of this tournament with two trophies.
U-23 Indonesian National Team challenged Vietnam U-23 in the final which was held at the Rayong Province Stadium, Saturday (26/8/2023) evening WIB. The two teams played out a goalless draw, aka 0-0 until extra time so the match went to penalties.
At 5-5, the failure of Indonesian goalkeeper Ernando Ari’s penalty kick became the difference. Vietnam successfully converted its last penalty to change the position 6-5, while ensuring itself as the 2023 AFF Cup champion.
This U-23 AFF Cup title is the second in a row for Vietnam after winning it in 2022. As a result, Vietnam leads the collection of winners’ medals in the four editions of this tournament.
Meanwhile, the host Thailand took third place, following a 4-3 victory over Malaysia on penalties after playing without a goal until extra time.
Two other teams that have won the AFF U-23 Cup are Thailand in 2005 and Indonesia in 2019 when coach Indra Sjafri coached them.
AFF U-23 Cup itself was first held in 2005 and had not been held for several years, including in 2011 when Indonesia was scheduled to host.
