The Vietnamese national soccer team, Klinsmann’s second opponent in the October international match, was soundly defeated by China.

Vietnam, led by coach Philippe Trussier, lost 0-2 to China in a friendly match held at the Dalian Sports Center Stadium in Liaoning Province, China, on the 10th.

The balance between the two teams, which ended 0-0 in the first half, tilted in China’s favor when Wang Chuming scored the first goal in the 11th minute of the second half.

In the 43rd minute of the second half, Vietnamese striker Nguyen Thien Linh hit the neck of naturalized English player Zhang Guang Thai with his elbow and was immediately sent off.

Vietnam, outnumbered, conceded an additional goal to Ouray in extra time in the second half and had to accept a 0-2 defeat.

In the FIFA rankings, China is 80th and Vietnam is 95th, and in February of this year, Vietnam appointed a new coach, Trussier, who led the Japanese national team after working with former coach Park Hang-seo for about five years.

Under Park Hang-seo, Vietnam achieved remarkable achievements, including advancing to the semifinals of the Asian Games for the first time (2018), winning the soccer championship at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games (2019), and advancing to the final qualifying round of the World Cup.

Vietnam, under former coach Park, invited China home in the third qualifying round of the Qatar World Cup in February last year and won 3-1.

The Korean national team, led by coach Jürgen Klinsmann, will play a friendly match with Tunisia at the Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on the 13th and then face Vietnam at Suwon World Cup Stadium four days later at 8 p.m. on the 17th.

Korea is far ahead of Vietnam in their previous record with 17 wins, 5 draws, and 2 losses.

The most recent match was in the 2006 Germany World Cup Asian region second qualifying round held in September 2004, and this is the first match in 19 years.

Coach Klinsmann wanted an opponent who would play tight defense during the October A match, and coincidentally, he was in the same group as Thailand in the second qualifying round of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup, so he scheduled a friendly match with Vietnam as a ‘virtual opponent’.
