Vietnam Coach Criticizes Team’s Physicality After Defeat to Indonesia in 2023 Asian Cup

Doha

Coach Vietnam Philippe Troussier criticizing his team’s physicality after being defeated Indonesia. Vietnam is considered only strong enough to play high intensity in 60 minutes.

Indonesia was able to beat Vietnam 1-0 on the second matchday of Group D of the Asian Cup at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Friday (19/1/2024) evening WIB. The Garuda Team’s only winning goal came from Asnawi Mangkualam’s penalty in the 42nd minute.

Towards the end of the match, Vietnam had to play with 10 players after Le Pham Thanh Long received a red card. However, Garuda was unable to exploit the superior number of players to add goals.

This result means that Garuda’s hopes of being in the top 16 are still open. They are currently in third place in Group D with three points.

Indonesia’s points are the same as Japan in third place. Indonesia is three points behind Iraq at the top of the standings, which has already ensured qualification for the last 16.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is at the bottom of the standings with no points yet. This result also ensures that Philippe Troussier’s troops will be eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup.

Troussier revealed that Indonesia’s first goal which came just before the break made things difficult for his team. He also highlighted the physical abilities of Vietnamese players which were still below his expectations.

Troussier felt that his children were only able to play at high intensity for 60 minutes. This of course made the Vietnamese players unable to carry out the tactics implemented by the French coach well.

“We conceded a penalty before the break and that got us into trouble. But I liked the reaction of my players. I was surprised by the way we played and tried,” said Troussier, quoted on the AFC website.

“The first weak point is the physical aspect. As we showed in this tournament, we can only play with high intensity for 60 minutes. Obviously we have to improve this aspect because in my system, the players have to run 9-10 km every match,” he explained.
