Vietnam Bans Screening of ‘Barbie’ Film Due to Controversial Pro-Chinese Scenes

The film “Barbie” will not be shown in cinemas in Vietnam for certain scenes deemed pro-Chinese.

Bad news for fans of Barbie. Indeed, the film will not be distributed in all countries of the world. Vietnam has decided not to broadcast the feature film on its territory. MCE TV tells you everything from A to Z!

Barbie offers a colossal marketing campaign

On July 19, Barbie will land in our dark rooms, decked out in her flashy heels and her perfect smile. In the meantime, Greta Gerwig’s feature film offers a gigantic marketing campaign.

It’s very simple, the cast of Barbie is everywhere. On on TV sets, on posters, on the Internet… The film even offers itself the luxury of working with huge brands.

For example, the cosmetics firm Nyx has imagined various products bearing the image of the Mattel doll. From the mirror in the shape of a flip phone to false eyelashes and even a gloss, there is something for everyone.

And that’s not all. Indeed, Microsoft also played the game by unveiling an Xbox collector. For the occasion, the console is in fuchsia pink, as are the controllers that accompany it.

To promote the film, Barbie even went so far as to put your house on Airbnb. Thus, she offers two lucky people to come and sleep in her sublime DreamHouse without paying a single penny. Nice !

For the past few days, Margot Robbie and part of the cast travel around the world to promote the film. Los Angeles, Sydney or Seoul, they go everywhere, or almost.

Indeed, the film crew is in no danger of setting foot in Vietnam. Indeed, the authorities of the country have decided to prohibit the distribution of the film on their territory. MCE TV tells you more!

The film banned in Vietnam for a political reason

The Vietnamese people will not have the opportunity to see Barbie. Indeed, while the film was to be released in the country on July 21, cinemas have just removed its poster from their websites. The reason ?

Some scenes of the feature film show a map on which appear the claims of Chinese power over the South China Sea. This is the nine-dash line.

This U-shaped line is used to illustrate Beijing’s claims to these sea areas. It also includes areas that Vietnam claims and which are disputed between the two countries.

Thus, the country made the decision not to let Barbie set foot in their country. Moreover, it is not not the first time a blockbuster has paid the price of this strict policy.

Indeed, in 2022 the film Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg had also been sanctioned for the same reasons. Suffice to say that it is not about to change, regardless of the film.

Either way, don’t panic. Barbie will be well and truly visible in the rest of the world. In France, you have to wait until July 19. To keep fans waiting, the film has already unveiled the French poster.

It therefore remains to be seen whether Barbie will manage to attract people to the room. The competition will be fierce with the release ofOppenheimer, Mission Impossible : Dead Reckoning, partie 1 or Indiana Jones 5. Case to follow!
