The film banned in Vietnam for a political reason

The Vietnamese people will not have the opportunity to see Barbie. Indeed, while the film was to be released in the country on July 21, cinemas have just removed its poster from their websites. The reason ?

Some scenes of the feature film show a map on which appear the claims of Chinese power over the South China Sea. This is the nine-dash line.

This U-shaped line is used to illustrate Beijing’s claims to these sea areas. It also includes areas that Vietnam claims and which are disputed between the two countries.

Thus, the country made the decision not to let Barbie set foot in their country. Moreover, it is not not the first time a blockbuster has paid the price of this strict policy.

Indeed, in 2022 the film Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg had also been sanctioned for the same reasons. Suffice to say that it is not about to change, regardless of the film.
