Director Viesturs Kairiss’ upcoming feature film “January”, produced by the studio “Mistrus Media” as a co-production of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, has received support from the European co-production fund “Eurimages” and is preparing to film, the representatives of the National Film Center informed.
Eurimages, an international co-production support fund that has been active since 1988 and held its 160th session in October, this time has supported the production of 18 feature films and 11 documentaries for a total amount of EUR 5,692,700.
Among the directors of the supported projects are many well-known professionals in Europe, including Oleg Sencov from Ukraine, Sergei Loznica, who works in the international arena, and others. Viesturs Kairiss’s upcoming feature film “January” in the studio “Mistrus Media”, for which the main funding has been awarded in the competition of the National Cinema Center, receives production funding from “Eurimages” in the amount of 190,000 euros – 13.09% of the film’s total budget.
For the feature film “January” production aid was granted in autumn 2019, in the thematic specialized National Film Center full – length film competition, which encouraged films to strengthen national identity and promote national affiliation, increasing the share of films as national content and their competitiveness in the Latvian cultural and information space. Viesturs Kairiss’s feature film, produced in the studio “Mistrus Media”, tells about the events of 1991 and is an almost autobiographical story of barricades. Latvia’s representative in the Eurimages Foundation, Deputy Head of the National Film Center Inga Blese admitted that the film’s theme and its artistic solution have addressed representatives of many Eastern European countries and this is one of the reasons why the project received support in an expert vote.
