Viesturs Kairišs, «Big and Small», Latvian Radio Choir Receives Award for Cultural Excellence / Article

In a solemn ceremony held on December 5 in the Great Hall of the Latvian Academy of Arts at 4 Kronvalda Boulevard, the winners of the Excellence in Culture Award 2022 were announced and welcomed.

In Viestur Kairisfilm and theater director – for the disclosure of historical and contemporary themes important for the Latvian society in cinematic and theatrical works of high artistic level, especially highlighting the latest feature film “January”, which caused significant international resonance, winning the main awards at international film festivals in New York, Warsaw and Rome.

For the publishing house “Big and small” – for a high-value, socially active and internationally widely recognized performance in children’s book publishing, culminating in the prestigious International Bologna Children’s Book Market Award received in 2022 in the category “Best children’s book publisher in Europe”.

for the Latvian Radio Choir – for the excellent national and international performances, especially for the musical recordings made by the choir, as well as for the brilliant and highly professional concert activity in Europe and in the world, which allowed the compositions of several Latvian composers to reach the level international music arena.

Eight candidates answered the call to nominate nominees this year. This year’s nominees represented cultural fields such as music, literature and books, visual arts, film and design. Nominations for the award have been submitted by institutions supervised by the Ministry of Education, sectoral advisory councils, non-governmental organizations and legal entities. The submitted nominations were evaluated by the Latvian National Council of Culture and approved by the Minister of Culture Nauris Puntulis (National Association), in accordance with the award regulations.

You can apply for the Excellence in Culture award if you have won an award in international and professionally prestigious competitions, festivals and other professional assessment events in the field of culture; whether the performance of Latvian artists or collectives, such as guest performances, concerts, exhibitions and other events, has gained wide resonance abroad, promoted Latvia’s prestige in the world and awareness of cultural value in Latvian society, as well as whether the performance attracted wide international attention and created resonance in the world, promoting cooperation and interaction between Latvian and foreign cultural spaces.

The Excellence Award in Culture was established in 2014, at the initiative of the Council of Creative Unions of Latvia and with the support of the National Council of Culture. The first Excellence in Culture Award Ceremony was held on 22 December 2014. In recent years the following have received the award: Aleksandrs Antonenko, Jānis Nords, Žanis Lipkes Memorial, Signe Baumane, Iveta Apkalnas, Andris Freibergs, Turaida Museum Reserve, Rasa and Raitis Šmiti, Andris Nelsons, Design Office “H2E”, Gidons Krēmers and Chamber Orchestra “Kremerata Baltica”, Alvis Hermanis, National Art Museum of Latvia, Rolands Kalniņš, Nora Ikstena, Imants Lancmanis, Elīna Garanča, Anna Lauder, Marina Rebeka , Gundega Laiviņa, “Latvian Literature” platform, Pēteris Vasks, Anete Melece, Rundāle Palace Museum.
