Viennese baths – innovations of this year’s bathing season

17 summer pools and 11 family pools open on May 2nd

After two late starts to the season due to the pandemic, the bathing season will start again as planned on May 2nd. Deputy Mayor and responsible city councilor Christoph Wiederkehr and the department head of MA 44, Hubert Teubenbacher, visited the Schafbergbad today and presented the innovations for the 2022 bathing season.

Around 500 employees have been on duty since April 1 to maintain the 603,420 m2 of lying area, to clean 26,474 boxes, 9,103 cabins and about as many sun leagues. 31,132 m3 of pool content was emptied and the pools were refilled after intensive cleaning.

“The anticipation for the coming bathing season is already very high. This summer, the Vienna baths are again offering all visitors – especially families – bathing fun and a variety of leisure activities. Thanks to all employees for their great commitment: the Vienna baths are ready! “, said Deputy Mayor and City Councilor responsible for Viennese swimming pools, Christoph Wiederkehr.

“Vienna swims!”

“With ‘Vienna swims!’ we enable children to catch up on their swimming lessons. Specifically, over 1,100 children can learn to swim with the new additional offer. We don’t leave any child behind and put a clear focus on the children’s swimming skills,” emphasizes Wiederkehr.

In the summer holidays of 2022, Viennese school children can make up for the swimming lessons they missed in the last two years. The offer is aimed at all children who have attended the 3rd grade of elementary school in the last three school years and have missed school swimming lessons due to the pool closures. In a 10-day intensive swimming course with a maximum of six children per course, they can learn the most important swimming skills.

The courses take place from Monday to Friday. They cost 25 euros per child. Legal guardians who receive the minimum income are exempt from the cost contribution. Registration is possible until the end of May 2022 in the pool of your choice or online.

All school children of the affected years will also have six free admissions to indoor and outdoor pools from the beginning of July to the end of September 2022 with an accompanying adult. The action card will be distributed to the affected schools at the end of May.

“Small children should never be left unattended and should be used to the water and learn to swim as early as possible!”, says pool manager Hubert Teubenbacher. “The City of Vienna, clubs and swimming schools make an important contribution to this and offer a wide range of course options.”

sports and entertainment

The popular sports and animation programs will be partially resumed. Animation teams and volleyball coaches tour the larger summer pools.

There are experiential English lessons during the summer holidays every Thursday in the Schweizergarten family pool (11 a.m.) and in the Laaerbergbad (1.30 p.m.) and Angelibad (3.30 p.m.) outdoor pools.

Pool construction program 2030

In addition to a construction program for two training halls and three swimming pools, the pool strategy 2030 also provides for the optimal use of the existing floor space and the modern upgrading of the offer. The first projects were already completed in 2021:

  • Construction of a water play garden and area expansion in the outdoor area of the Jörgerbad
  • Construction of a water play garden in the outdoor area of the Brigittenau indoor pool
  • Construction of a water play garden in the outdoor area of the Floridsdorf indoor swimming pool
  • Construction of sports fields, also for multiple use, in the Ottakringer Bad
  • Renovation of the bathing jetty at the Alte Donau lido

Numerous projects will be completed again in the 2022 season:

  • Gänsehäufel lido: The renovation of the wave pool in stainless steel will be completed at the beginning of June. Three more beach volleyball courts will be built on the soccer field, which means that six courts are already available. The rest of the football pitch is divided into two small pitches.
  • Sommerbad Simmering: The existing children’s pool, into which the water slide also flows, will be removed and replaced by a slide target pool. The water play park is being rebuilt, and there is also a new children’s pool with a diameter of 11 meters and a 16 x 8 meter teaching pool, a novelty in Vienna’s outdoor pools. The new pools are scheduled to open in July 2022. The water slide can already be put into operation at the beginning of June.
  • Ottakringer Bad: The forecourt will be renovated during the summer holidays.
  • Jörgerbad: Making the indoor pool barrier-free with the outdoor area open during the summer holidays.
  • Großfeldsiedlungsbad: New sports fields for football, beach volleyball, basketball, also for multiple use, are available from the start of the holiday. Furthermore, the planning and awarding of the first major project is in the final phase. Construction of a new training hall begins in November. The changing area in the Großfeldsiedlung summer pool, which was destroyed by arson in 2021, has been rebuilt and is now fully available to bathers again.
  • Schafbergbad: After the construction of two new beach volleyball courts suitable for multiple use, a total of three sports facilities are available.

Energy saving contracting

Energy saving contracting agreements have already been concluded for 16 indoor and outdoor pools in Vienna’s swimming pools. In the course of these energy saving projects, solar systems and heat pumps were installed, heating and ventilation systems were optimized, heat recovery systems were installed, control systems and pumps were renewed and a completely new filter technology for the pool water was installed. This can reduce water consumption by up to two thirds. Since the pool water has to be heated, a corresponding reduction in heat demand is expected and guaranteed by the contractor. A new control technology enables the operating parameters (such as pool water temperature, water quality, operation of the solar system, etc.) to be viewed at any time in the pool control center.

“As the responsible city councillor, it is important to me to emphasize the services of the Viennese baths. Not only inexpensive bathing fun, but also sustainability and environmental protection are particularly important. Therefore, more than 16,000 m2 of total solar area, of which more than 1,700 m2 are used for photovoltaic areas. Here in the Schafbergbad alone there is almost 2,000 m2 of solar thermal energy on the roofs,” says Wiederkehr.
