Vienna’s First Child Care Home for Complex Illnesses: Fridolina – Closing a Gap in Care

With the Fridolina nursing home in the House of Mercy, a gap in the care of children and young people with life-limiting illnesses in Ottakring has been closed. The first child moved in in mid-November.

VIENNA/OTTAKRING. “At the House of Mercy, it has always been our mission to take on difficult cases,” emphasized Christoph Gisinger, director of the House of Mercy, at the opening of Fridolina. The first inpatient care service for children and young people with complex, chronic illnesses has opened in Vienna.

14 children and young people aged up to 18 years find a child-friendly and homely environment here. Fridolina’s offering includes long-term, around-the-clock care, short-term stays and even hospice care. Katharina Furtis is one of the two managers alongside Nicole Hainz: “Coming from child and youth care, we have experienced various strokes of fate and were a contact point for parents and children. We have always wanted a range of services like Fridolina’s.”

Fridolina the protector

Now the wish has become reality. The child care home was funded by the Vienna Social Fund (FSW) and implemented by the House of Mercy with the Momo outpatient children’s hospice and children’s palliative care team. The name “Fridolina” is derived from the Old High German word for “protector”. “The children who find a second home with us should grow up here in safety and security,” say Hainz and Fourtis.

Need to care for children

Families should be an integral part of life at Fridolina. The focus is on close collaboration and constant exchange of information. The employees and employees also stand for this. Doris Gypser is a qualified health and nursing assistant and sees her job as a calling: “It has always been a great need for me to care for and accompany children and to support them in their life situations.” Her colleague Iris Kopf, also a qualified health and nursing assistant, adds: “There is a very special atmosphere in the house.”

There is currently no need to worry about having enough staff. “We are in the fortunate position of having found enough employees,” says Katharina Furtis.

Adapt services to the population

Monika Badilla from the FSW explains why they are proud of the implementation: “The best care network is not perfect, which is why we always strive to further develop the services and adapt them to the population. For children with life-shortening offers, there have so far only been mobile offers.”

Health City Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) did not hold back in his joy about Fridolina: “We are a city of cohesion and leave no one behind. I really mean that. For people who can afford something, there is always good health Supply. But it’s about seeing, taking with you and looking. It’s also about taking risks. It’s a moment in which I actually just have joy.”
