Vienna’s Citywide Construction and Redesign Projects: New Trees, Bike Lanes, and More

Construction sites are visible across the city as far as the eye can see. The city’s goal, for example on Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse in Margareten, is “Get out of the asphalt”. The redesign between Schönbrunner Strasse and Arbeitergasse has been in the works all summer. Under 32 new trees will be planted.

First section “almost finished”

The first section up to Margaretenstraße is “almost finished”, is emphasized in a “Vienna Today” local inspection. Only the greening is missing there. Since it is still too hot, this will follow in autumn. Work is currently underway on the second section from Margaretenstraße to Arbeitergasse.

“The sidewalks will be massively widened to six meters. You can already see the borders for the beds, where trees are planted as well as grass. In the middle is the relatively narrow lane for the one-way, which then leads up in the direction of Matzleinsdorfer Platz, where bicycles can also ride,” explained Thomas Keller, department head for road administration and road construction at MA 28. Everything should be ready by November there the diversions for the buses will remain in place.

Reinprechtsdorfer Straße remains one-way

In the course of the expansion of the U2 underground line and extensive pipe-laying work, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße became a one-way street in 2019. It will stay that way forever. The second lane doesn’t come back. “In every project, no matter where we go, greening is particularly important – i.e. trees, grass, beds and also common areas. That is really the maxim for the funding pot. We try – and this is also my concern – not to intentionally annoy drivers. But there are areas where it cannot be avoided,” emphasized planning councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ).

Construction sites at a glance

The construction site summer is in full swing. In addition to the major subway expansion, there are a number of other large and small construction sites in the city.

Construction on Praterstrasse continues

In the future, one lane will also be removed from Praterstrasse in Leopoldstadt. For the “Rad-Highway”, which will in future run over a distance of seven kilometers from Kagraner Platz to the city centre, only one lane will be available from the Danube Canal to the Praterstern.

After the work by Wiener Linien and Wien Strom, the city will start work on the new cycle path and the redesign at the end of August. “With the redesign, a two-way cycle path that is up to 4.5 m wide and structurally separate is being created on the side leading out of town over a length of more than 900 meters – from the Praterstern via Praterstrasse, Aspernbrückengasse and Aspernbrücke,” says Sima. In Aspernbrückengasse, an additional green strip is to be built along the new two-way cycle path, and nine new trees are also planned. Completion is scheduled for autumn 2024.

200 projects in sight so far

In total, the city of Vienna has around 200 projects that have so far been targeted for redesign. This also includes the redesign of Piaristengasse in Josefstadt. “Eleven tree discs and three micro-free spaces will be erected there in the area of Florianigasse, Josefstädter Strasse and at Jodok-Fink-Platz,” said Keller. At least here, the construction site should be finished when school starts.

Pfeilgasse becomes a bicycle street

In Pfeilgasse, also in Josefstadt, construction will not begin until mid-September. In the future, a bicycle road will lead there from the Lerchenfelder Gürtel to the “Zweierlinie”. “Starting from the Guertel it then goes down to the ‘Zweierlinie’, with the first construction phase going from the Guertel to Strozzigasse. Next year we will then continue the further part from Strozzigasse via the crossing Piaristengasse to the ‘Zweierlinie’”, said Keller.

The forecourt of the school in Pfeilgasse, including Lisette-Model-Platz, was redesigned last year together with the district under the motto “Get out of the asphalt”. There is a lot of bicycle traffic there. With the Fahrradstraße, an “important cycle connection from the city center to the west of Vienna” is to be offered. More than 500,000 cyclists are said to have been counted here in 2022.
