Sixth game, sixth win: The Vienna Vikings remain on course for success in the European League of Football (ELF).
The reigning champion defeated the Panthers from Wroclaw on Saturday evening at the Hohe Warte in Vienna after a big fight and a catch-up race with 24:21 (10:21). The Vikings thus consolidate the lead in the Eastern Conference.
The Raiders Tirol, meanwhile, won 17:3 (3:0) against the Dragons in Barcelona and are also on course for the playoffs.
Driven by almost 4,000 spectators and the Styrian military band, the Vikings take the lead as planned with a touchdown by quarterback Chris Helbig. After that, however, the guests from Poland take the initiative and come three times into the end zone of the Viennese. The Panthers therefore go into the break with a 21:10 lead.
In the second half, the Vikings defense turned up the heat and conquered the leather five times from the guests. In attack, however, only a little succeeds, running back Florian Wegan and shortly before the end Weston Carr still turn the game with touchdowns in favor of the defending champion.
“We weren’t perfect today. I don’t know if it was the heat or if we thought it would be easy. We weren’t focused in the first half and it was really a good Panthers defense,” said coach Chris Calaycay . “It was enough to win. We take every win.”
Raiders secure second place in Central Conference
In Barcelona, touchdowns by Jarvis McClam and Lukas Haslwanter and a strong defense are enough for the Raiders to win. With five wins and two defeats, head coach Kevin Herron’s team secured second place in the Central Conference behind the still undefeated Stuttgart Surge.
The next opponents are the Ravens from Munich, who are coming to Innsbruck next Saturday (1:00 a.m.).
The Vikings receive Berlin Thunder at the same time. The Viennese also announced that they would also play the last two home games in the ELF regular season (August 19 against the Raiders, August 26 against Fehervar) at the Hohe Warte.
