In March, overnight bookings increased by 61 percent to 1.1 million compared to the same month last year.
Tourism in Vienna has picked up again after the pandemic. Most recently, it was almost back to pre-crisis levels. In March, the accommodation establishments booked 1.1 million overnight stays – that was 61 percent more than in the same month last year, which was still slowed down by Corona, and already corresponded to 88 percent of the volume in March 2019, as the marketing organization Wien Tourismus announced on Monday.
An increase of 207 percent year-on-year
Between January and March, overnight stays in Vienna totaled 2.95 million this year – an increase of 106 percent compared to the same period last year.
The net overnight turnover in Vienna’s hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments rose by 136 percent in February compared to the same month last year and by 9.2 percent compared to 2019. In the first two months of 2023 taken together, it was reportedly 117.1 million euros – an increase of 207 percent year-on-year. Sales for March are not yet available.
The average occupancy of the hotel beds reached 44.6 percent in March (same month last year: 30.1 percent), that of the rooms around 56 percent (March 2022: 38 percent). In the first quarter as a whole, bed occupancy was 39.6 percent this year (same period last year: 21.9 percent) and room occupancy was around 50 percent (March 2022: 28 percent).
7,200 more beds
According to Vienna Tourism, around 70,000 hotel beds were available in the reporting month – that was 7,200 beds or 11.7 percent more than a year ago.
Most overnight stays came in March with 253,000 bookings from guests from Austria (plus 46 percent). This was followed by 212,000 overnight stays from Germany (plus 56 percent). 61,000 overnight stays came from Italy (up 120 percent), from the USA 57,000 (up 117 percent), from Great Britain 44,000 (up 84 percent), from Spain 31,000 (up 31 percent), from France 28,000 (up 47 percent), from the Ukraine 22,000 (down 52 percent), from Israel 25,000 (up 32 percent) and from 21,000 (up 111 percent).
