Vienna to Open Specially Adapted Skate Hall for Popular and Elite Sports in 2023/2024 Winter Season

The 1500 square meter hall should meet the demands of both popular and top-class sports – and open in the 2023/24 winter season.

Anyone who wants to be sporty in Vienna with inline skates, roller skates, skateboards, scooters or BMX bikes will soon be able to do so in a specially adapted hall. A former commercial property in Floridsdorf is being redesigned accordingly. According to the town hall, the 1,500 square meter hall should meet the demands of both popular and elite sports.

The facility in Vohburggasse is operated by the Skateboard Club Vienna. After renovation work, it is scheduled to open for the 2023/24 winter season. It is assured that the needs of different user groups will be addressed. This means that internationally competitive standards should also be met. After all, skateboarding is already an Olympic discipline, people emphasize.

competitions and training

The hall will also be available as a venue for competitions and as a training facility. In order to make the offer widely usable, low-threshold courses for skateboards or scooters are also planned. Further training for skate coaches should also be part of the program.

The operation of the skate hall is embedded in low-threshold children’s and youth work and socio-educational project work. Cooperation with schools, youth centers and clubs is planned. At certain times, the hall should only be accessible to certain groups, such as girls or queer people.

“The new skate hall in Vienna is not only a place for passion and physical activity, but also a space that promotes community and opens up new opportunities for children, teenagers and young adults. With modern equipment and international standards, it offers skaters of all levels optimal conditions”, youth city councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos) was convinced in a message.

City Councilor for Sports Peter Hacker (SPÖ) was also pleased that a separate hall has been found for the constantly growing skater community, which can also be used in winter. According to Hacker, the necessary structural adaptations and the equipment of the hall will be carried out by Municipal Department 51 (Sports Office).
