Taylor Swift’s three upcoming concerts in Vienna have been canceled due to possible terror threats.
They were to take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Ernst Happel Stadium.
A statement from the organisers said: “Due to the confirmation by government officials of a planned terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled concerts for security reasons.”
The statement added that “all tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days.”
Taylor Swift’s Vienna concert canceled. Chancellor speaks out
“The security situation surrounding the planned terrorist attack on Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna ‘was very serious and a tragedy was avoided,'” Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said late on Wednesday.
“Thanks to the intensive cooperation of our police and intelligence agencies with foreign services, it was possible to identify the threat in time, combat it and prevent a tragedy,” he wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
For Taylor Swift’s fans, the cancellation of her concerts in Vienna is a “bitter disappointment”, the chancellor admitted.
Vienna. Suspects of planning terrorist attacks arrested
Earlier, foreign media reported that two people suspected of planning terrorist attacks in the capital had been arrested in Austria.
Austrian Public Security Director Franz Ruf confirmed the reports. He said a 19-year-old Austrian citizen was arrested in Ternitz on Wednesday morning. A second person was arrested in Vienna, but no details about the suspect were given.
The Austrian Press Agency (APA) reported that authorities are aware of “preparatory measures” for a possible attack and that the detained 19-year-old is “focused on Taylor Swift’s performances in Vienna”.
Austria. Those arrested planned an attack during a concert in the capital
Franz Ruf said that “according to the current state of the investigation, both suspects were radicalized via the internet.” The 19-year-old had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, a Sunni extremist terrorist organization.
According to the BBC, a large police operation took place in Ternitz, where the 19-year-old lived. While the Austrian’s apartment was being searched, several houses nearby were evacuated.
– Chemical substances were found at the scene and are currently being investigated, said Franz Ruf.
